Exploring the deep dream octave setting.

So here we have one of the early works of aronimus. Landscape at Dusk.  I fiddled around with the octave value, but otherwise left all the other parameters alone.

The original image is an acrylic on canvas piece involving extensive dry brush techniques.  Which isn’t all that obvious from the mediocre photo I took…  😛

At an octave value of 2 we have not much of a change.  Just an overlay of interesting shapes and eyeballs.

At an octave value of 7, things get rather interesting.  3d writhing worm like creatures,  a figure with a deformed head and where did that duck come from?

Quite a different result with an octave level of 10.

I had a big play around with photos of oil refineries the other night and was going to post them but they were simply not all that interesting.  A machine working repetitively on the imagery of a rather linear and repetitive machine created all very repetitive and linear results. Yawn…  Though may have been more interesting if I had done what I did tonight with some octave tweaking.  I shall revisit a couple and see if they become worthy of the internets…  Or maybe warp them a bit in photoshop. Yes.. that could work.

  • deep dream infection

aronimus discovers deep dream and manages to actually make it work!

So after traipsing through the creative desert for some time now aronimus stumbled across this juicy visual goodness that is Googles deep dream.  Not being content with looking at the creations of others, or queuing in line on the overloaded servers making this tech available to the masses, yours truly did set his mind into ubergeek mode.  The task:  with no knowledge of Python and scant knowledge of programming or linux for that matter, make Googles code work on his trusty, if aging, i7.

The code is actually quite easy to use.  Getting the linux VM up to run it… not so easy.  But after 2 evening’s of brain hurting exertions….  here are some of the early results.

Not sure I’m down with all the dogs that keep coming up.  Apparently this is because of the copious amount of cute doggy pics in the the Google dataset.   Must look into finding a way to load other datasets.  Managed to get what one could only call a hipposlug in the picture above though.   Interestingly the Hermit managed to come through looking much the same.  Could this be that the image is in the dataset so the neural net actually knows what it is so no need to invent fanciful interpretations?  Not sure what that is bottom right.  A morbidly obese Jack Russel?

Defintely pleased with Eketahuna’s Cliff Walk land of mutated forest dwellers.

Because Google were feeling generous I’m feeling generous too.

    Here’s how I got it going….

    Though with some minor changes.

    1. No need to use Powershell.  Use the command prompt
    2. No need to set the path variable, it does it itself.
    3. For those unfamiliar with navigating a filesystem in Linux…  If you can’t find the ‘vagrant’ folder once you get the VM running…  type “cd /” then “ls”

    The last attempt for tonight…

  • Re-arrangeable Artwork – Golden ratio geekery

Beholden unto, the re-arrangeable artwork! Some golden ratio geekery in orange hues.

Re-arrangeable Artwork - Golden ratio geekery

This here work was a commission done quite some time ago in exchange for some most excellent acupuncture treatment.  Not the usual palette of aronimus being predominantly orange but it was to the clients desire.  The brief was that it used the golden ratio and was a re-arrangeable artwork in 3 pieces.  aronimus started by constructing canvasses with their dimensions set to the golden ratio which happens to be 1.61803398875.

He then added some guidelines that would allow what ever was painted to link up with the content of the other pieces.  Next came a Fibonacci Spiral as that was also mentioned in the brief.   He then added to it as ideas came to mind.

Re-arrangeable Artwork - Golden ratio geekery

The client did take a look in the early stages and was pleased but advised he would like them to be able to be hung in any direction as well.  By removing the reference of ground, it all became a more complex and confounding piece.  After fiddling around some, aronimus added a forth painting as it allowed for a greater number of arrangements. Thus it was no longer a triptych.  Does that make it a quadtych?

Re-arrangeable Artwork - Golden ratio geekery

On completion it was apparent that a revolutionary new hanging method would need to be devised.  Fortunately aronimus was feeling rather intelligent after working on such a mind expanding piece.  He did very rapidly develop this new super secret and hitherto undivulged hanging method and it worked rather well.

Re-arrangeable Artwork - Golden ratio geekeryAnd so the hanging technique shall remain undivulged….
Though leave a comment if you’d like to know how to do it and aronimus just may tell you.

  • The Path of True Knowledge

Acolytes ride the path of true knowledge.  As they pass the great wondrous workings of nature in the form of huge palm trees, they become aware of something greater than themselves.  An awareness of the cosmos.  The path is like unto a conveyor belt.  Rather than walking the path the acolytes merely stand upon it, watching the great workings go by.  Almost like tourists…   But tourists they are not.  They have chosen the path of enlightenment.  To see beyond the everyday.  The banal.   To see the cosmos for what it is.

The Path of True Knowledge II
Acolytes ride the path of true knowledge

An earlier work by aronimus.  Conceived while taking some down time in his home town after his great roamings across South East Asia.

The Path is frequent subject matter for aronimus.  Inspired by some text from the Theosophical Society. Writings from one of the founders or early members.  Harun does not believe it was Helena Blavatsky whose daughter potentially had a support role as SS High Priestess Oberführer Marianna Blavatsky in Wolfenstein.

On recollection, it could have been Annie Besant (1847–1933), second President of The Theosophical Society from 1907 to 1933.  Harun will endeavour to find the actual quote that inspired him to make the path such a feature of his work.

  • A Reflection on “Progress”

A reflection on “progress”.  Or what we are led to believe is progress.

An office worker sits hunched over his desk.  Bored out of his mind and his mind it doth wander…  wander or wonder?
It could be that it starts to wander.. and in doing so is free to wonder…    and he ponders..

    A Reflection on "Progress"
A reflection on “progress”. Or what we are led to believe is progress.

This is one of the earlier works of aronimus.  Indeed, before the manifestation of aronimus from the lesser son that existed before.
The person that went on to be come aronimus aka Harun had been stuck behind a desk for an extended period of corporate toil.  Then one day, whilst browsing the www he did discover an establishment known as The Learning Connexion.  He did abruptly hand in his notice and head off to the hallowed and former consecrated ground of Erskine College.   Former home of an art school know as The Learning Connexion.  For some unbeknown reason, they traded a “c” and a “t” for an x.

This painting was a product of that period.

  • First Contact. Space faring entities encounter a new world

Here we have some musings on the painting known as First Contact.

Strange space faring biological entities descend through the vaporous atmosphere of a new world.
The many tentacled queen, some scouts and workers are about to touch down.  Ground zero for the new colony.

What are these creatures that have come to be?
That have evolved beyond mere atmospheric flight.  Evolved to the point that interstellar travel is possible.  Vacuum adapted and immensely powerful.

Roaming the cosmos for aeons in search of new homes.
Are they peaceful? Do they have combat abilities?   Time will tell.

  • Primordial Forces and the Process of Creation

He we see primordial forces at work.  Engaged in the process of creation.

Primordial forces.   A cosmic influence from space  interacts with the young planet.  Elements and strange gravitational forces combine to form a biosphere.

Primordial Forces and the Process of Creation - aronimus
Here we see primordial forces engaged in the process of creation.

    Pondering on creation.

Many a man hour has been spent musing on how this all came about.  Religion and Science strive to answer these questions.  Was there a big bang?  A colossal explosion and every thing formed aimlessly from there.  This image could indeed fit in with such a scenario.  Intelligent design.  Did an almighty being construct all that we are now part of?  This image could be a representation of that too.  It is a depiction of the forces at play.  Melding together.. rearranging.   Everything finding its place in the world.
